Why Photohawk asks for two agreements

Face grouping and cloud face matching each need your agreement before Photohawk makes any face data. What you agree to, and why both are required.

Updated November 3, 2026

Grouping the faces in your photos into people uses face data, a kind of biometric data, so Photohawk asks for your agreement first. It asks twice, separately, before it scans anything.

Before the agreements: where you live

Laws about face data differ from place to place, so Photohawk first asks Where do you live? It suggests your iPhone's region from its language settings; it never uses GPS or your IP address for this. Your answer is kept on your phone and sent with your agreement to cloud face matching. You can change it later in Sharing and privacy → Where you live.

Photohawk isn't available in Illinois. If you choose Illinois, nothing is scanned and no face data is made; choose I chose the wrong place if that was a mistake.

1. Face grouping

The first screen explains what happens, in your language: faces are found on your phone; small face cut-outs (never whole photos or videos) go to your own private collection in our cloud; face data is used only to organise your photos; it covers everyone in your photos, children too; and it's kept until you delete it. You tick the box (it starts unticked) and tap Agree and continue.

2. Cloud face matching

The second screen explains that the cut-outs are matched in your own face collection, run for us by Amazon Web Services in Ireland (EU), and that the face templates are kept there so new photos can be matched to the right people. Tap Agree and continue.

Why both are required

Finding the people in your photos is what Photohawk does: People, naming, sharing photos with the people in them and memories all depend on it. If you don't agree, Photohawk makes no face data and sends nothing, and shows Photohawk needs face grouping with two choices: Go back (to read it again and agree) or Delete my account.

The full details are in the face data policy.

Questions people ask

Can I use Photohawk without face grouping?

Not as a full user: grouping the people in your photos is what Photohawk does, so both agreements are needed. People who only chat and receive photos aren't asked, and nothing on their phone is scanned.

Why does Photohawk ask me again?

When the wording of an agreement changes, Photohawk asks again before it makes or sends any more face data. Nothing is deleted when it asks again.

How do I withdraw my agreement?

Tap Delete all face data in Sharing and privacy. Everything is erased, on your phone and in the cloud, and Photohawk asks for your agreement again before it goes on.
