Why People says “Grouping people…”

While faces are matched in your cloud collection, People shows “Grouping people…”. What it means, how long it takes, and what to do if it seems stuck.

Updated November 3, 2026

Photohawk finds faces on your iPhone, then groups them with cloud face matching: small face cut-outs go to your own collection in our cloud, and the groups come back to your phone. Until the first groups are back, People says Grouping people….

What you see

  • Grouping people…: faces from your photos are being matched. People appear as soon as their groups are ready.
  • Counts such as People found · Faces grouped · Waiting. Waiting is faces still on their way to a group.
  • On a new photo, Finding who this is… until its faces are matched, usually within seconds.

During a big scan, people are grouped as the scan goes, not only at the end. Anyone with 3 or more photos shows up in People and can be named straight away.

Why it can take a while

  • No internet. Faces wait on your phone and are sent when you're online again.
  • Signed out. Matching starts once you sign in.
  • A big first scan. Faces are sent in batches as the scan goes; the first people usually appear within a few minutes.

Photohawk never gives up on waiting faces: it retries by itself, from a minute to half an hour apart.

Faces that couldn't be grouped

If a photo can't be read to make its face cut-out (for example, an iCloud photo that couldn't be downloaded), Photohawk tries again on later scans. After several tries the face counts as couldn't group instead of waiting.

Still stuck?

Check that you're online and signed in, open Photohawk and leave it open for a few minutes. If People still says Grouping people… after that, contact us.
