After you've signed in, said where you live and given the two agreements, Photohawk offers Start your 7-day free trial (the trial covers your first scan) and then starts scanning.
Allow photo access
iOS asks whether Photohawk may access your photos. Choose full access so it can find everyone. Photos are scanned on your iPhone and stay there. If you chose selected photos only, you can change it in your iPhone's Settings, under Photohawk → Photos.
Your last year first
Photohawk scans newest first. As soon as your most recent photos are done (your last year, or at least your newest 1,500 photos), their faces are grouped and the scan screen says Your last year is ready, with the people found so far. This usually takes a few minutes, however big your library is. You can start naming people straight away.
Then your older photos
For the rest of your library you choose:
- Keep going now: the scan carries on while you use your phone.
- Finish tonight while charging: the rest is scanned whenever your iPhone is charging. This is the default for big libraries.
- Just the last 3 years: older photos are left out. You can add them later in Sharing and privacy → Scanning → Older photos → Scan all of them.
Whatever you choose, new photos you take are scanned straight away.
While it scans
Home fills in as the scan goes: the people found so far, Name your people, and recent photos. Anyone with 3 or more photos shows up in People and can be named at once. If Photohawk finds a child, it offers to set them up.

Questions people ask
Can I use the app while it scans?
Yes. Tap Start exploring: People, Home and search fill in as the scan goes, and you can name people straight away.
Does Photohawk need access to all my photos?
To find everyone, yes. With access to selected photos only, Photohawk sees only the photos you picked, and people in your other photos won't be found.
