Upload by FTP with your own FTP server

The shared FTP servers closed on 1 November 2026. Start your own FTP server from the web uploader, on every plan, and connect FileZilla to it.

Updated October 29, 2026

The web uploader is faster than FTP for most people: it sends many photos at once, puts previews up first and resumes on its own. When FTP is essential to your workflow, start your own FTP server whenever you need it. It's included in every plan.

Start your FTP server

  1. Open the web uploader: go to upload.photohawk.com, or open a gallery's Upload tab.
  2. Choose FTP server at the top, then Start FTP server. It's ready in about 30 seconds.
  3. Copy the details from the Your FTP server panel into your FTP app.

Your connection details

UsernameYour Photohawk email
PasswordYour Photohawk password, or an FTP-only password

EncryptionPlain FTP, or FTPS (explicit FTP over TLS) on your host name

Rather not save your Photohawk password in an FTP app? Choose Create FTP password in the panel. It only works on your FTP server.

Set up FileZilla

  1. Open File → Site Manager and choose New site.
  2. Protocol: FTP – File Transfer Protocol. Host: your address. Port: 21.
  3. Encryption: Use explicit FTP over TLS if available.
  4. Logon Type: Normal, with your email and password.
  5. On the Transfer Settings tab, choose Passive, then Connect.

Upload to the right folder

Your folders are /Galleries/<gallery>/<collection>; a gallery with one collection is simply /Galleries/<gallery>. Create the gallery and its collections in Photohawk first. Photos appear in the gallery within moments.

It switches itself off

The server switches off after an hour without activity, and the panel shows a countdown. Keep it running restarts the countdown; Stop switches it off now. Start it again whenever you like, with the same address and login.

If something doesn't work

  • Can't connect: check the panel says Ready. If the host name is brand new, use the IP address shown for a minute.
  • The folder list hangs: turn on passive mode.
  • "Too many failed logins": wait 15 minutes, then check the username (your email) and password.
